Rules are important. They exist to guide us in the course of our lives. Following the rules is, for the most part, essential for well living. Although, sometimes rules can be a little extreme and a peaceful revolution might be needed to (un)straighten things out. Time for a fashion rebellion. Here’s how I defy the irrelevant laws of fashion in the name of freedom of style.
- STICK TO WHAT FLATTERS YOUR BODY TYPE.
Now, we all have different body types and for each one of them there are specific pieces of clothing that flatter best the figure. We can follow the fashion rules dictated by the style specialists and only wear what we are supposed to wear to have a sliming looking figure and all. But I say why can’t we forget about all these ‘’guidelines’’ and just wear what the hell we think looks nice on us. According to theory, with my body type, I can’t wear flare pants, but here I am wrecking the hell out of this rule and rocking my flares like there’s no tomorrow.
- AVOID WHITE, IT’S NOT SLIMING.
A very untrue rule, if you know how important the style and shape of your clothing can be. If you are looking to wear sliming outfits, don’t restraint yourself to wearing only black because theory says black is sliming, but rather look for pieces of clothing of any color you like even white with shape and structure that can give your outfit a defined silhouette.
- DON’T MIX STYLE TYPES.
This is such a ridiculous statement. Who says I can’t wear my classic structured blazer with my street style distressed jeans looking fierce and edgy? Mixing different style types is what can truly give depth and flair to any look.
- TIGHT ON TOP & LOOSE ON BOTTOM FOR BALANCE AND VICE VERSA.
Following this rule surely results in well balanced outfits. Although unfollowing it makes daring assertive looks ahead of the latest fashion trends. Watch me break the law as I march to protest against the fashion regimen in my stylish loose on loose look.
- WEAR YOUR AGE.Says who? If I find a cute playful bag that looks childish but very stylish to me, Imma wear it. Don’t care if I ain’t 12 anymore. I’ll wear my LOL bag if i want to. Period.
- BLACK AND NAVY DON’T GO TOGETHER.
Styling a navy blouse with black flares makes the perfect well put together combo and totally cross out this unnecessary fashion rule.
- BUY YOUR SIZE.
I got this floral blazer/kimono two sizes bigger than my usual size, because it was the only one left and I loved it too much to give it up. Since it already has a loose looking style, I actually love how oversized and sloppy it looks. That’s just one of many examples of clothing pieces I own that are not my true size. Sometimes going with a different size can actually be better and give a different spin to the original true to size item.
- WEARING SOCKS AND SANDALS IS TACKY.
I admit. The combination of socks and sandals can look pretty tacky. But the right type of socks and sandals can give your outfit an authentic retro vibe that looks nothing like tacky. Defy the rules and own it.
- SHOP ONLY IN THE WOMEN’S SECTION.
No darling. When I go shopping I shop everywhere including the kids and the men’s section. Who would’ve guessed I found this super stylish bomber jacket from menswear?
- CAN’T WEAR MAXI DRESSES/SKIRTS IF YOU DON’T HAVE THE HEIGHT.
By now, you know I’m not a fan of dressing just according to what the mainstream fashion rules tell my body type should wear. So, let me rock my maxis even if I ain’t got a 5’11 top model height. And to you, fashion police, I’ll be running with the train of my dress manifesting my revolt loud and clear. Catch me if you can.
If you want to join me in my march against the book of fashion, send me the fashion rules you want to break and show me how well you do it. Let’s strike off the list all the absurd rules that offend our freedom of style.
